HankNow Archives
lego appears to rule?

My home page is a starting point that will include some topical thoughts and links and issues that don't really deserve there own page, yet!

HankNow! (right here, right now) is the most current Hank's obsession, of which there seem to be a never ending supply of. Eventually each HankNow pages will be archived into it's own page with category heading, like this one will soon be "HankNow Lego".

This heirarchy will be applied to the other areas, Jack, DaDa, HMP, CSC and the least focused area, Other Stuff.

I just got a new scanner (great deal on a refurb Epson 3200, pretty much top of the line, does negs and flat art) so you can be expecting a lot more archival images. I think I will put up some kind of HankBio page. But for now here are some winners from my 35th(or was it 37th?) birthday party.

I wanted a Piñata and my pal Chris O'Donnell went to my favorite hispanic market Numero Uno and purchased one, along with some kick-ass tacos they make in the parking lot.

NUMERO UNO,
710 East Jefferson Blvd.
Described as "largest indie supermarket in LA" with a huge selection of
chiles and related products.

As is the case with Chris O'donnell, everything gets proper photo documentation.

The purchase

Mr. Piñata gets mauled as he is stuffed into Chris's rental car.

Many photos ensue.

It was also the year I got my nose hair clipper.

The happy 35 year old and his Piñata

Worlds Largest Go-Cup

Jack and went to the LA Zoo for the first time the other day and in line for tickets was the largest go-cup I have ever seen. I snapped off this image, but lucky for me it actually has the volume right there on the side. All the sudden 52 oz. does not sound all that big. I think I have heard about 64 ozers, right? Is there a 128?? Does Moores Law apply to these items as well? Will someone please email me with all the answers???

LEGO

Jack and Matty build big tower from the ever present lego box. Moments later Jack went "oh noooooooooo!" Which means he knocks it over. Scared the shit out of Matty when he did it. It IS, by the way, the largest tower built in our home

I borrowed this from a previous page (1/2 Price Sushi) because I need to clear the air on the Lego thing.

It was only yesterday someone introduced me to Fark.com, and already I have nearly bought a tee-shirt, found an amazing deal on a wireless router ($20 from buy.com after rebate) and links to yet more Legophanailia.

Star Wars Lego is the real deal, and here is one of the larger depositories of the stuff.

From Bricks to Bothans

You want something more elegent, try this flashy looking site devoted to the art of "brick" building. The Art of the Brick.

I cannot explain it, but Lego is making a huge impact on my life recently. First there was Lego Escher which shouldn't really be first, but last because it kind of sums up the whole Lego and Escher thing. Oh, I forgot. Both Lego and M.C. Escher (Wikipedia) M.C Escher (official?) seem to be everywhere right now. In my small world that is.
A week after I saw the Lego Escher site I read a piece in LA Weekly, then The LA Times and finally LA Magazine about the Lego Master Builder annual competition. There was a picture of someone in the LA Magazine from a previous master builder competition that had them standing in the middle of a small road surrounded by buildings all in Lego. The Master Builder contest is some sort of state by state run-off until the finalist have 24 hrs to go for the baddest lego build they got. I could not find that much about the competition, please forward me any info you stumble onto.
But then I get directed to something far more incredible, not about Lego, but about Escher. You gotta go to this site and make sure to look at the final product. Mathematical reintroduction's of Escher's piece, "Print Gallery". After that I happened onto a beautiful Escher inspired animation piece that made me do a little Lego looking around and I found stuff like a website with rock albums covers done in Lego, a White Stripes video directed by Michel Gondry done in Lego. Of course there is always gonna be:

Lego Porn

Lego Star Wars

Lego Segway

You get the idea. Did you know that Lego is manufactured completely in a robotic environment? I mean I don't even know where I got this link from, that is why there is more to this than just a couple of happenstance links be tossed about. Here is a really cool half video game looking look into the process by which Lego's are manufactured.

The other Escher thing you have to look at is this. Called "Fly Thru" it would have certainly ended my drug use if I had stumbled on to it 30 years ago. Oh, by the way. And then I was following a banner add in my email to by Jack a Seame Street watch with his name on it when I discovered this: LEGO: Mission to Mars.

All in all I think the Lego/Escher moment has passed. Someone I was working with recently was visiting my site for the first time and after linking to the Escher Lego, he thought I was doing that. I mean like he thought I was actually building those things in my spare time.

How cool is that!
