I was a TV junkie

May 9, 2008

I was a TV junkie as a kid. I remember vividly rushing home when I was 10 or so, trying to get back to my 14 B&W Sony before Dark Shadows ended. I knew the schedules for each day of the week from between 3-10pm. I lived for it.

This behavior continued well into my teens. There were inconvenient episodes when my mom decided to lock the boob tube up with a chain and a combination lock (lasted two days) or a more final episode where she tossed the idiot box down the incinerator of our apartment building. (That was much more effective, we didn’t get a new one until we moved to Jersey)

But this post is not about my TV addiction or about the difficulties in getting a pre-adolescent boy to kick a very bad habit, it is about what I remember as being my favorite shows were often pretty the odd balls. It is not like I discovered anything, but when I look back at the stuff I liked the best, it was more obscure than many of the shows that I remember as an adult.

This all came into a clanging reality the other day when I stumbled upon a commercial for a product that I had completely forgotten about, I mean at first when I saw this I was not even sure if what I was seeing was something I really remember, or had been planted in my brain my space aliens only to unlocked at this very moment for some life changing reason. It is CLANKY!
Since finding this I have been singing it in my head over and over. I go to sleep singing about CLANKY and I wake up singing about CLANKY. I make up my owns words and always with a huge smileeo n my face. I loved CLANKY!, and I hope you will to. (Jack my son did immediately).

Below is a self made YouTube player containing many of my favorite TV oddball items. Let me know what you remember.
